The Sport Skill Model of Soft Skill Acquisition

If we participate in a sport skill as part of growing up, we got an unknown side benefit. We were also trained in an effective way to learn or to grow our soft or people skills. But to do that we need to work with educators, trainers and coaches who understand what it takes to use The Sport Skill Model of Soft Skill Acquistion. They must develop skill development programs which derive from the following critical factors.

1, They must identify indivduals who are true experts in the skill and observe them, often in very systematic ways using video-tape and other recording mechanisms.

2. They must analyze thia expert behavior and break it into a set of ‘micro-skills’ which individuals can learn and practice in a set of focused drills, just a sport skills are broken into micro skills (e.g. dribbling, throwing passes, and shooting baskets in basketball).

3. They must develop role plays and simulations which work in the same way as scrimmages do in sport – integrate the mico-skills into practiced ‘in the moment’ full mind-body responses which are so embedded in our minds and bodies that we don’t need to consciously think about apply them as they are needed. We call that kind of response ‘muscle memory’ in sport training.

4. They must intergrate all of their ‘expert skill program development work” into training programs which allow us to effectively work through the Sport Skill learning sequence depictedi in the schematic above.
